Illuminating Mental Representations through Speech and Gesture

چکیده
Can the gestures people produce when describing algebra word problems offer insight into their mental representations of the problems? Twenty adults were asked to describe six word problems about constant change, and then to talk aloud as they solved the problems. Two problems depicted continuous change, two depicted discrete change, and two depicted change that could be construed as either continuous or discrete. Participants’ verbal and gestured descriptions of the problems often incorporated information about manner of change. However, the information conveyed in gesture was not always the same as the information conveyed in speech. Participants’ problem representations, as expressed in speech and gesture, were systematically related to their problem solutions. When gesture reinforced the representation expressed in the spoken description, participants were very likely to solve the problem using a strategy compatible with that representation—much more likely than when gesture did not reinforce the spoken description. The results indicate that gesture and speech together provide a better index of mental representation than speech

Gesture and Mental Representations 1 The Role of Gesture in Supporting Mental Representations
People frequently gesture when problem-solving, particularly on tasks that require spatial transformation. Gesture often facilitates task performance by interacting with internal mental representations, but how this works is poorly understood. We investigated this question by exploring the case of Mental Abacus (MA), a technique in which users imagine moving beads on an abacus to compute sums, ...
متن کاملUnderstanding conservation delays in children with specific language impairment: task representations revealed in speech and gesture.
PURPOSE The authors investigated mental representations of Piagetian conservation tasks in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and typically developing peers. Children with SLI have normal nonverbal intelligence; however, they exhibit difficulties in Piagetian conservation tasks. The authors tested the hypothesis that conservation difficulties may be due to the degree to which chil...
متن کاملAction's Influence on Thought: The Case of Gesture.
Recent research has shown that people's actions can influence how they think. A separate body of research has shown that the gestures people produce when they speak can also influence how they think. In this article, we bring these two literatures together to explore whether gesture has an effect on thinking by virtue of its ability to reflect real-world actions. We first argue that gestures co...

متن کاملDivergence of verbal expression and embodied knowledge: Evidence from speech and gesture in children with specific language impairment
It has been suggested that phonological working memory serves to link speech comprehension to production. We suggest further that impairments in phonological working memory may inuence the way in which children represent and express their knowledge about the world around them. In particular, children with severe phonological working memory decits may have difculty retaining stable representa...
